Day 38 Sat 9 Mar ???? to Varazdin, Croatia 92 km

On the way out of Slovenia
Leaving the comfort of the EU - where's my passport

Another lovely morning and suddenly I was leaving the EU as I arrived at the Croatian border. "Passport please". The raven-haired Goth-like woman on the booth was officious and unsmiling. "Where are you going" she demanded". "Turkey" I replied.
"On that?"
"Yep|". She shook her head as she handed back my passport.

Croatia joins the EU in July so she will probably be out of a job.
I met another guy as I was putting on my wet weather gear in yet another bus shelter. Perfect English. He had lost an arm and had only 2 fingers on his other arm. I wondered if he was injured in the war. Pointing across the field to a 11,000v electricity pylon he told me that when he was 10 he had climbed the pylon and got electrocuted. He said he liked to ride his bike but he kept falling off as it was difficult to brake with one hand and steer properly. Quite! He also told me that if I was camping in the east of the country to watch out for the 'minefield' signs. Apparently a Swiss camping couple were blown up last year. Noted!

I camped right next to the (inactive) airport on the outskirts of Varazdin.
