Choosing to go up around
Lake Garda to Trento instead of a straight line through Vicenza added miles and mountain climbs but for some perverse reason I wanted to do that route. As soon as Lake Garda came into view I knew it was the right decision - Spectacular! I took 39 photos on the journey and could have taken many more. The road around the lake hangs on the mountain side. The water is crystal clear and the towns along the way are well-preserved and very neat. I think a property here would cost a small fortune.
I chatted to a couple of divers who had just emerged from the lake. From the roadside the bottom plunges to a depth of 300m (that's deep!). "Is there much to see down there?" I asked doubtfully. "Oh, there's interesting rock formations just like the mountainside above" one replied. I'll give it a miss. They did offer me a cup of hot sweet tea from their flask which is essential first aid for divers beaching after 50 minutes in a water temperature is 8 deg C.
After leaving the lake at 75m I gently climbed up a glaciated valley (See, I remember something from my Geography lessons) pulling up short of Trento to avoid getting caught in an urban area again. I camp on the edge of a bike path - in the daylight!
